EMISSIONS TRADING FOR SHIPPING

The European Emissions Trading System was extended to shipping companies from January 1st, 2024. Since then, EU ETS has had to cover CO2 emissions from cargo and passenger vessels (>5 000 GT) entering and leaving EU ports, regardless of their flag.

By September 2025, shipping companies must surrender their first Emission Allowances (EUAs) for the emissions reported when calling EU ports in 2024.

Shipping companies will have to surrender 100% of their 2026 verified emissions by 2027. Prior to 2026, a gradual phase in period is established:

2024

40% of verified emissions.

2025

70% of verified emissions.

2026

100% of verified emissions.
