Voluntary carbon offsetting

Striving to keep below 2°C temperature increase by 2050 compared to the 1990 levels we are living through one of the most important periods of earth’s history. Decarbonisation has become one of the main priorities for governments and corporations all around the world, who are joining the efforts to contribute their share to the transition towards a low or carbon neutral economy. For corporations the transition to low carbon operations is a difficult and complex task that is bound to many challenges including economical sustainability
and technological feasibility.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS FOR BUSINESS LEADERS IN SUSTAINABILITY

ABOUT VOLUNTARY CARBON OFFSETTING

Carbon offsetting is the action of balancing out an organization's emissions by investing in projects that reduce emissions relatively to a particular baseline.  Companies, cities, governments and other organisations or individuals, who are concerned about its environmental sustainability typically start their climate action by calculating their carbon footprint.  Once they map the main sources of their greenhouse gas emissions, they start implementing reduction measures to decrease emissions and environmental pollution.

For the part of their emissions, that are either too expensive or technically impossible to mitigate, they compensate by buying carbon emission reduction units from projects that reduce emissions somewhere else in the world, where it is still technically possible.

So the emissions reduction can be carried out by:
Investing directly in the reductions and running mitigation projects in-house,
or by buying emissions reduction units (CER, VER, VCU, REDD+).

For the project developers, the action of selling of emissions reduction units helps the project financing and therefore the voluntary purchase of each unit represents a compensation of each tonne of CO2e that has been avoided in the atmosphere.

Each project can be issued with as many units as many tonne of CO2e of greenhouse gas emissions it has been verified to avoid. The emission reduction units are issued to the project developers by competent authorities, verified by licenced verification companies, certified by internationally recognized quality standards and held and retired in the unit registries (Union Registry, GS Markit or APX).

*Information regarding carbon footprint calculation for aviation emissions:

Higher impact of CO2 emissions from aviation due to the altitude is reflected in Vertis corporate carbon footprint calculations by using the emission factors including RFI (Radiative Forcing Index) published by Defra (Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs of the UK).
