EUAs fall below 8 euro

2018-01-03 08:29

On the first trading day of the year, the EUA Dec18 lost 37 cents or 4.5% from where it closed in 2017.

The benchmark contract closed the day at 7.81 euro. Profit taking from the recent rally, lower power prices and deterioration in the profitability of the coal and gas fired power plants weighed on the price. Some market participants were also afraid that the pattern of the last two Januaries would repeat and ran ahead of the market. The traded volume of 9.6 million however was still just a fraction of what we saw before the holidays.

Germany produced 210 TWh power from renewable sources in 2017, 15% more than in 2016. The share of renewables within the country’s energy mix reached 38.5%, close to the German target of 40-45% by 2025. Wind production reached a new record at 104 TWh, and became the second most important source of power after lignite (134 TWh).
