Since 1st of January 2024, European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) has been extended to cover CO2 emissions from cargo and passenger vessels (>5 000 GT) entering and leaving EU ports, regardless of their flag.
Shipping companies will have to surrender 100% of their 2026 verified emissions by 2027. Prior to 2026, a gradual phase-in period is established:
2024: 40% of verified emissions.
2025: 70% of verified emissions.
2026: 100% of verified emissions.
